HairMax LaserComb: An Ultimate Answer to Hair Loss

Tuesday, 19 July 2011

Hair loss, for many people, is not a demoralising condition. However, many men and women who have encountered hair loss can become very anxious and embarrassed about the condition. Androgenic alopecia is a common type hair loss in men. This hair condition is more commonly known as male pattern baldness.

Though there is no specific age that people experience hair loss, but timely treatment can help to slow down the process. At any given time the human head has more than 100,000 strands of hair, and about 100 of these hairs shed every day. When we look at the average growth cycle of a hair, it is about 2-6 years, after which a new hair grows and replaces the old one. So the next time you find loose hairs on your pillow after waking up in the morning, there may be no reason to panic too much because, generally, the hair that is lost is replaced with a new one.

What causes hair fall?

It is a well know fact that each strand of hair is rooted in a follicle, which is a tiny sac in the scalp. If we talk specifically about male pattern baldness, the hair follicles develop sensitivity to a male hormone known as dihydrotestosterone (DHT). As a result, the follicles shrink in their sizes and are not able to hold the hair. It also affects the scalp's ability to grow new hair. This leads to a pattern of hair loss which starts receding hairline at the temple.

Laser combs: An ultimate solution for hair loss

In the past, laser therapy was only used for removal of unwanted hair. But over time, it was discovered that by adjusting the strength of the laser, you can encourage and enhance the natural growth of the hair. The lasers can strengthen the damaged hair follicles to recover their functions in the same way it can heal soft tissue wounds by promoting blood flow to the area. The HairMax LaserComb is an innovative product among a number of hair loss products on the market that ensures an effective treatment of hair loss problems. It is basically a sleek handheld comb that stimulates hair follicles increasing cellular metabolism and the development of capillaries (minute blood vessels) in the scalp. This ultimately increases the circulation of the blood to the scalp, which brings essential nutrients to the hair follicles. As a result, the follicles become capable of growing thicker and richer hair.

How to use the HairMax LaserComb?

Using a HairMax comb is as easy as combing hair. You simply have to turn on the laser button to get it started. Place the laser comb on your scalp and glide its 2 rows of teeth as though combing your hair. You need to glide it back half an inch each time until a 4-second beep is heard. In the same way, you can use this laser comb for the hairs at the back of your head. The FDA has approved The hairMax LaserComb Advanced 7, The hairMax LaserComb Lux 9 and hairMax LaserComb professional 12 to be used by both men and women for the treatment of their hair loss.

Types of Hair Loss or Alopecia

Tuesday, 28 June 2011

The most common type of hair loss affecting men and women all over the world-even kids couldn't escape this type of hair condition-is alopecia. alopecia is said to be the medical term used to identify the loss of hair from the head or even from the body. Alopecia, unlike other causes of hair fall, is not due to any underlying illness. A person suffering from alopecia is said to be physically fit but with an unhealthy "ego" since a balding condition deteriorates self-esteem.

"alopecia areata" is a type of alopecia, wherein loss of hair in some or all areas of the body occurs, usually from the scalp during its first stage. "alopecia Totalis," which is observed in 1%-2% of cases, is experiencing hair loss on the entire scalp. With "alopecia universalis," total loss of all hair on the body was observed.

Another type of alopecia is "alopecia Barbie"; this type of loss of hair was observed on men especially in the beard area. A type of alopecia which results in scaly patches was also observed and is called "alopecia Mucinosa."

Male pattern hair loss or "Androgenic alopecia" is the thinning of the hair to an almost transparent state. Dihydrotestosterone (DHT), a male hormone, is said to be the primary cause of Androgenic alopecia. Since women produce male hormones too but of small amounts only, they are also prone to developing androgenic alopecia. Dihydrotestosterone, if accumulated in the scalp, causes the hair follicles to shrink; this is called "miniaturization." Once the hair follicle has miniaturized, eventually the older hair sheds off, growing "peach fuzz," a very thin transparent hair that resembles that of a cat's eyelashes. With this kind of hair growing on a certain area of the scalp, it would seem a bald spot is in its appearance.

To fight alopecia, you need to halt the cause-DHT. Here is one of the two most popular DHT inhibitors in the market today: there's minoxidil, originally formulated to fight high blood pressure but found out to possess a hair-growing side effect and was then used to regrow hair.

"Rogain" contains 2% - 5% moxidil and is said to be an effective over-the-counter topical drug that reduces DHT level in the body. Here are some of the severe side effects of Rogaine use: rashes, hives, or "urticaria" (swollen, pale red bumps); itching; difficulty in breathing; tightness in the chest; swelling of the mouth, face, lips and tongue; chest pain, dizziness; fainting; fast heartbeat; redness or irritation of the scalp; sudden, unexplained weight gain; swelling of the hands or feet and unwanted facial hair growth.

Finasteride is also an effective hair loss treatment and an accurate DHT inhibitor that was originally formulated as a treatment for "prostate enlargement" and "prostate cancer." It was found to possess hair-regrowing side effects and later on used in "Propecia," containing 1mg finasteride. Propecia is a prescription drug (not suitable for women) that is said to be effective to reduce testosterone levels in the body. Propecia or finasteride has side effects like erectile dysfunction, low libido and impotence.

Saturday, 28 May 2011

Around twenty five percent of people will have some kind of hair loss issue in their lifetime. Hair loss can be caused by many different things it does seem like the number is slowly increasing. There are many different treatments for hair loss, some are natural where as some are artificial and others are a hybrid of both. Some of the products help your hair externally where as some are digested and help your hair from within. Hair Growth Shampoo helps by delivering certain hair growth ingredients topically.

Health Starts From Within

The same type of food that is considered diet food is also very good for the production and development of your hair. The goes for males and females but today we are going to focus specifically on the ladies. Diet plays a very big role in hair health so if you eat a diet composed of fried foods your hair will most likely be brittle and break easily.

Omega oils are also important in your diet, they promote healthy joints and hair growth. People who lack these healthy fats develop arthritis faster and their hair generally grows slower. Iron is also something that is key in hair development. Women generally have low iron levels after childbirth which can lead to hair loss and breakage.

Eating foods like red meat, lentils and poultry can raise your iron levels. When you fry foods it lowers their nutritional value so try to eat food that is fresh and grilled if at all possible. Vitamin B-12 is one of the keys to feminine hair loss. You can find it in foods like shellfish, milk and eggs. Your hair has to have vitamin B-12 to be healthy.

Many women suffer from the lack of healthy B12 levels one this is treated their hair usually becomes healthy in as little as a few months. So if you are having problems with hair loss this will stop it and encourage new hair growth. Vitamin B7 is also a key player in hair loss. It helps grow new follicles by making the scalp as healthy as possible.

You can find biotin in your every day diet in foods like peanuts, liver and raw egg yolks. The egg white counter acts the effects of the biotin so if you want to obtain B7 like that make sure you only ingest the yolk. The most common way to get biotin in your system is with hair vitamins or by taking a biotin supplement. The recommended daily dose of biotin an adult should in take is right around 600mcg's a day.

Another great supplement to add to the list is zinc oxide which helps balance out hormone levels which can lead to premature hair loss. The average adult should ingest about 20mg of zinc oxide a day. Folic acid is also very important in hair growth it is also know as Vitamin B9 or Bc. It helps make your scalp more healthy and inhibits new hair growth in combination with B12.

Natural Plants That Help with Hair Growth

A groups of herbs that are great for hair growth are know as a botanical blend called trichogen. Trichogen was developed in Europe it is basically a botanical blend of 18 different herbs that when mixed together help put your hair back into a healthy growth phase. When hair becomes healthy it will grow stronger and faster. When the follicle is at its healthiest is when you are going to see the most progress. This may not be able to stop hair fall completely but it can drastically slow it down.

hair growth can be affected during menopause by HRT which is also know as hormone replacement therapy. This is where neutral hormones are put back into a womens body to regulate her level. This can effect hair growth, if the levels are too low the hair will grow slowly and be weak so having correct levels are very important. A good natural replacement is green tea the antioxidants help balance out testosterone and other hormones.

There are many other things said to work for hair growth, wether they do or not is really up to the person who uses them. Everyone is different for one person licorice extract may lead to new growth depending on why the hair was not growing before. For others it may not due anything because the hair loss is due to stress not lack of certain vitamins or minerals.

Reasons to Care About Your Hair

There are certain hair products that are more prone to damage your hair, this is a clear cut fact. Damaging products can cause things like weak hair and thin hair. The hair thins because the bulb that holds it in place deteriorates causing the hair to simply fall out. If you are having trouble with thinning hair using a color treatment or chemical treatment is a huge gamble. Most of the time it won't due any damage, but every once in a while it will cause your hair to fall out in large patches. This is caused because your scalp gets irritated and swells causing the follicle to die and fall out.

Regrowing Your Hair By Natural Means Is The Ultimate Way To Prevent Hair Loss

Friday, 29 April 2011

Whether you are a man or woman, losing your hair can be traumatizing. It will help you to know that androgenic alopecia is the most common reason why men and women lose their hair. Also known as male pattern baldness, it starts by the hairline receding over time to form an "M " shape on the scalp. Concurrently, there is also an overall thinning of the hair. With both of these things happening at the same time, baldness will eventually set in.

Why androgenic alopecia takes place is due to excessive amounts of DHT. DHT is the short form for dihydrotestosterone. It is a naturally occurring hormone that the body produces. However, in excess, it causes your hair follicles to shrink. As your hair goes through each cycle of growth and regrowth, each new strand becomes thinner and thinner until the hair follicle becomes too tiny. At this stage, new hair growth does not take place and baldness is what happens.

You might think that balding will happen only after a certain age. But the truth is that male pattern baldness can start even just after puberty. If your family has a history of this condition in either the men or women, it could just happen to you. Unfortunately, if nothing is done about this condition as soon as it is detected, you may just end up being bald.

Androgenic Alopecia - Can You Do Anything About It?

When it comes to stopping hair loss because of excessive DHT, it is definitely possible. Many other men and women have fought the battle and have retained their hair. The key to success is to first reduce the excessive levels of DHT in your body back to the normal trace amounts required. As it is still required by your body for other necessary functions, you do still need some DHT in your system.

To reduce excessive amounts of DHT in your body, there are two choices:

1. Through the use of synthetic chemical drugs or

2. through the use of natural treatments.

Synthetic drugs for treating the loss of hair are Propecia and Rogaine. While they have helped some people, not everyone accepts that this is the only way to treat thinning hair. The other disadvantages you need to know about using chemical drugs is the side effects that come along. For example, it can cause gynecomastia. Which is the growth of breasts in men. Other equally harsh side effects are erectile dysfunction, chest pains and other ailments.

If you wish there are alternatives to chemical drugs, you should be very happy. The use of natural hair loss methods is a favorite alternative to taking drugs. Being natural and organic in essence, they do not have the kind of side effects that you may get with synthetic drugs.

All things said and done, using a natural hair growth remedies to stop hair loss is better than the use of chemical drugs or other options like hair transplant surgery. You don't get unwanted side effects and you do not have to incur the kind of costs and risks that may come with conventional hair loss methods.

More About Male Pattern Hair Loss

Wednesday, 29 December 2010

Male pattern baldness occurs when hair loss exceeds growth of hair. It is a genetically inherited condition. Some women also suffer from male pattern hair loss and this is because of excessive levels of androgen in their bodies. These women also suffer from irregular menses, acne and more facial hair than others.

There are various reasons for baldness but if you are in the age range of 20 to 40 and you suffer from baldness, there are high chances that you are suffering from male pattern baldness. As the name suggests, this health condition follows a typical pattern of hair loss. You can start losing hair in different areas, but it usually starts around the crown of your head. Your hair starts thinning and over a period of years, you may become totally bald. Almost 50% of the men experience baldness at some point in their life.

Cause of male pattern baldness

Male pattern baldness depends mainly on hormones and genetics. Testosterone, a hormone present in males after puberty is converted to dihydrotestosterone (DHT) by an enzyme 5-alpha reductase. Several tissues in the body, including the scalp have DHT, which affects the hair follicle adversely. It slows down hair production, and produces weak and shorter hair. Gradually, this process depletes your hair totally.

Lupus and diabetes lead to baldness. Fungal infections are also known to cause hair loss. Excessive intake of vitamin A in the form of medicines is also a factor along with intake of birth control pills and antidepressants. Hormonal fluctuations, overactive or underactive thyroid gland, side effects of medications for chronic diseases, and stress are some of the factors that cause baldness.

Hair loss can have a significant psychological impact, depending on the severity of the same. Many men who experience hair loss suffer from low self-esteem and reduced confidence. If you lose hair suddenly, you should visit a doctor and take expert advice. Baldness can occur because of many reasons, and it can be treated successfully using medications such as Propecia.

Propecia

Finasteride, marketed as Propecia, is an FDA approved oral medication that treats male pattern baldness. There are many advantages of using it as a method of baldness treatment. It blocks the conversion of testosterone in to dihydrotestosterone. The reduction of DHT slows down hair loss, and at times, it is even reversed. Since, baldness is directly linked with DHT, this drug works by blocking it. More than 80% of men, who have taken it, experienced a rise in hair growth on their scalps.

Decrease in sex drive, loss of libido, reduced volume of semen, and Gynecomastia are some of the side effects of Propecia. It was found, that men who had taken this drug, experienced mild sexual dysfunctions as a side effect. Side effects of this drug are temporary, and once the intake of this medication is stopped, the situation returns to normal. This drug is not recommended for women and children. Most men who use this drug are happy with the results.

Teen Hair Loss - Mom, I’m Losing My Hair!

Sunday, 30 August 2009

Hair loss is usually the last concern of any female teen. Although sometimes teenagers experience losing their hair too. In this case, it may be a sign that something may be wrong. You have to calm yourself though since, this is not much of a life and death situation.

So let us talk about our crowning glory: the hair. It is composed of keratin which is a type of protein in our body. The hair is made up of a hair shaft, the root and the follicle. At the deeper end is the hair bulb, where the hair’s color pigment- melanin is produced.

Statistics tell us that baldness strikes 40% of men by their thirties. And more than 65% of them will have the “monk” type of haircut or the typical set where the hair is only at the back of the head and around the temples and bald on top – by age 75. It is a known fact that baldness strikes so much fear in men because this is a sign that the aging process is already starting. Age, as we know is something we hate but yet can not do something about its coming.

However when you are losing your hair during your adolescence phase, it can be more stressful. Why does it have to happen during a time when appearance is all that matters? It can be devastating to self-esteem and confidence too.

In our head, it is normal to lose about 50 to 100 hairs a day. No need to worry because these hairs are replaced in the same spot. If your teenager is losing more than that, it is indeed time to be alarmed. It is a good idea to go to a doctor to determine the cause of the problem. Your doctor can suggest some treatment to correct these using modern methods.

Teen hair loss may be due to sickness or poor nutrition. Strong medications or medical treatment can also cause teens to lose their hair. Some improper hair care should be avoided. Lathering on too much hair gels and creams can cause the hair roots to weaken and break easily.

Listen up guys! Making your hair stand up like a cathedral and being “hip and cool” do have its own disadvantage. And hear me out girls! If you wear a hairstyle that pulls on the hair so tightly like braids or ponytails, you can damage the hair follicles and will prevent or slow down the growth of healthy hair. So I suggest you let your hair breathe once in a while. Do not tie it up and punish it everyday.

At times, stress can cause hair loss in teenagers. They might be going through a difficult time at school, probably thinking about problems in their class subjects or handling peer pressure. It is best to talk to your parents or teachers to find out how you can relieve your negative stress.

Although there are studies that say balding is usually extensive if it starts in the teen years, the good news is that some research claims that it is often temporary. Once the cause of the problem is corrected, hair will usually grow back.

Hair Diseases Resulting Into Hair Loss

Sunday, 16 August 2009

Hair diseases and hair loss are interrelated. One cannot be thought about without the other.

Common hair loss causes

No single factor can be marked out as the universal cause of hair diseases. There are several causes varying from person to person.

The two types of hair loss diseases

The hair loss causes can be broadly divided into the following two groups – the temporary effect and the one involving a prolonged action, usually triggered by genetics.

a.)The temporary effect – Usually such cases can be cured by medications and treatments.

b.)Prolonged hair loss diseases – Such cases may require long term treatment. Sometimes the drug treatment might appear to be ineffective. In such circumstances surgery like hair transplantation may be the way.

The causes of temporary hair loss include the ones like child birth, using birth control pills, etc.

Another key factor can be hormonal imbalance. It can have a severe impact by causing pattern baldness. The latter comes in the list of major hair diseases.

Relation between hair diseases and hair loss

It is sometimes found that a particular hair loss cause is more commonly related to a particular hair disease. In this context one can refer to the acquired hair shaft defects. These defects are usually triggered by the excessive use of hair treatments and styling products.

Similarly, infectious diseases have their root in unhygienic scalp.

The common causes of hair loss diseases

The common causes of hair loss diseases include the following –

• Hormonal imbalance

• Ailment

• Faulty hair styling

• Inadequate diet

Hormonal Imbalance

In men – Hormonal imbalance is a major cause of hair loss diseases among men. The male hormone testosterone plays a key role in actuating hair loss. The enzyme 5 alpha reductase in the hair follicles turns testosterone into dihydrotestosterone (DHT). The latter is the most potent androgen promoting male pattern baldness, the common hair loss disease.

In women – Imbalance in thyroid hormone is a key cause of sudden hair loss among women. The thyroid gland’s being n the state of overactive and under active might cause hair fall. Thyroid hormones largely influence cellular metabolism of scalp proteins, carbohydrates, lipids and minerals. And the hair matrix cells are highly affected by the thyroid hormones’ excess or deficiency.

Hormonal imbalance also causes hair loss during pregnancy. Pregnancy witnesses a high level of estrogen hormones. This causes hair follicles percentage in anagen growth phase. But post-child birth there is a rapid fall in the estrogen level. Consequently a large number of hair follicles shift to a catagen phase. And gradually hair falls.

Women may also experience hair loss during post-pregnancy period. It is generally temporary in nature. But if it continues for months, then it may indicate hormonal imbalance in the body. And hormonal imbalance for an extended period requires proper treatment.

Ailment

Some of the serous ailments like high fever, severe infection, or flu may lead hair follicles to a resting phase. This condition called telogen effluvium results increased hair fall. But it is a temporary condition soon to be followed by normalcy.

Some cancer treatments also prevent the hair fiber growth. The hair becomes thin and breaks off. And gradually hair loss occurs. The condition starts within one to three weeks after the beginning of the chemotherapy treatment. The treatment may witness the patients losing up to 90 percent of their scalp hair.

Faulty hair styling

It means using certain hair styling techniques resulting in hair loss diseases like traction alopecia. In this condition the hair fibers are pulled out from the hair follicle by a hairstyle that pulls on the roots of the hair fibers. One example of such faulty hair styling is braiding cornrowing. Cosmetic treatments like bleaching, coloring or hair straightening like chemical relaxing can also create problems if proper procedure is not followed.

Inadequate diet

Taking up crash diets for rapid weight loss may lead to hair loss. Such diets are low in protein, vitamins and minerals, thus causing malnutrition.

Abnormal eating habits lacking important nutrients can also result into hair loss.

Stop Hair Loss And Regrow Hair !

Hair loss in men

Hair loss and thinning hair have been sensitive issues for men throughout time. Recently, medical science has eventually identified the main cause of hair loss. At present, it's a known medical fact that hair loss stems from both genetic and hormonal causes. Androgenetic Alopecia or even "male pattern hair loss" is implicated in ninety five percent of hair loss cases. The key is a hormonal byproduct called DHT (dihydrotestostrone). The even more DHT that gets put into your body, the even more your hair follicles turn into thinner and finer until the hair is permanently wasted.

DHT and hair loss

DHT is 1 of many male hormones in the body. DHT is developmentally vital early in a man's life; however, it appears to be a cause of hair loss as men get older. DHT shrinks the hair follicle until it no longer produces obvious hair.

Doctors believe that excess DHT is an apparent cause of hair loss

The causes of hair loss aren't well defined; however, researchers have uncovered that men with male pattern hair loss have increased levels of DHT in the balding area of their scalps. Individual hair usually follows a cycle of expansion, falling out, and new expansion. However increased levels of DHT are believed to contribute to the shortening of the expansion phase and a shortening of the time it takes for the hair to fall out. This results in thinning of the hair on the scalp.

Provillus blocks DHT (dihydrotestostrone) from getting to your body, which is 1 of the major causes of hair loss. The Breakthrough formula of Provillus was designed to block DHT and supply the proper foods to your body specifically tailored to block hair loss and to help you regrow hair naturally. Strong, sound hair begins with the proper nutritional building blocks. You do not have to hold off until there's a problem to end it! Saw Palmetto acts by lowering DHT in the body and by blocking five alpha-reductase. Saw palmetto blocks the receptor sites on cell membranes that are expected for the absorption of DHT. Since Saw palmetto blocks the employ of dihydrotestosterone (DHT) which is a similar causative factor in Androgenetic Alopecia, it's a powerful herb in this hair expansion formulation.

Nettle root blocks two enzymes, 5a-reductase, which makes the dihydrotestosterone (DHT) and aromatase enzyme, which makes estrogens. Studies showed that nettle root extract was efficient in inhibiting these two enzymes which was a leading cause of hair loss.

Gotu Kola is related to the and supports the integrity of hair expansion, collagen and skin. It can help heal minor wounds and skin irritations, help assure blood vessel integrity, and promote circulation throughout the body, including to the brain. How To Stop Hair Loss And Regrow Lost Hair

Curing Hair Loss : Hair Like Samson (before he met Delilah)

A multi-millionaire will be made one day – the day a scientific researcher finds a simple, inexpensive, universally successful hair regrowth product. And that day will come. The amount of money being funneled into hair loss research is phenomenal, and as long as our society puts such great stock in appearance and beautiful heads of hair, the research will continue until that simple cure is found.

Until then, men and women must investigate and experiment with a variety of products which will have a variety of results, dependent upon the individual. Each human body is unique, with unique levels of hormones, chemicals, and enzymes. For this reason, to date, there is not a universal cure. Some people experience reduction in hair loss and solid regrowth, while others using the same product may not see the same results.

For those who experience less than desired results from the variety of topicals, pills, herbs and hair products available, there are currently surgical “cures,” if they have the financial wherewithal to pursue them. These involve a variety of transplant techniques and can be tedious and a bit painful. Such cures are available for both men and women.

Transplants: In transplants, a hair strip is taken from a donor area of the scalp, usually the back, because pattern baldness in both men and women usually does not affect the back of the head. From these stips, individual follicles are extracted and then implanted into the bald area of the scalp. The “art” of this procedure is to get the follicle in so that the slant of the hair is correct for that part of the head. There are usually 1-5 hairs in each follicle, so you can imagine how many transplants have to occur if someone wants a full thick head of hair to replace a completely bald spot. The average cost of transplant, per follicle is $4 - $6. The average cost of pattern baldness transplants is about $10,000.00 – a hefty bill for most of us. For women who have overall balding events, the cost can be greater still.

If you do not have $10,000 to spend at the moment and you must wait until regrowth products improve, you may have to be content with less preferable but effective methods like using Provillus available at http://www.provillus.com. There have been great advances in hair pieces for men, and wigs are as much a fashion accessory as jewelry for women. If you select this route, buy a good one and go to a professional who is widely experienced in developing unique hair pieces for individual needs. Generally, you get what you pay for. Fit and ability to have confidence that wind and lots of movement will not move your hair piece are extremely important. While not the permanent cure you really want, the embarrassment of societal reaction to your baldness is eliminated.

Keep abreast of research in the area of hair loss cures. Scientists are close, and the answer could come any day. In the meantime, do what makes you feel comfortable and confident, and use any product that helps you reduce the rate of your current hair loss. Stress and anxiety over this condition will only make it worse.

Hair Loss Products & Hair Follicle Test

Sunday, 26 July 2009

With the recent advances in hair products it was just a matter of time before someone invented a test that would help to find out why men and women lose hair. This test has finally reached the public and is sure to take the beauty world by storm. We’ll take a few minutes to help you understand what this test is and how it can help.

The hair follicle test uses hair that is taken directly from your head. This can be done in your own home and mailed in to the lab. This is important as you will never have to visit a doctor’s office for this test as the hair can be mailed from anywhere in the world and a sample is easily taken. To take a sample of hair your simply run your fingers through the parts of your scalp where you perceive to have the worst hair problems. You then take that sample of hair and put it into a ziplock bag. It is important to note that you shouldn’t be plucking the hair from the scalp. You simply run your fingers thru until the hair’s simply barely come out. This should not be hard to do. You want to avoid combing to get them out as that may rip them out of the scalp as well. Next you will mail these samples into the lab.

Here is what the test can help you to understand. Many people suffer from a variety of hair problems including hair breakage, hair thinning, sebum build up on the root, bacteria build up on the root, hormonal hair problems, lack of nutrition in the hair and even stress that affects hair growth. By looking at these hairs thru a microscope most of the above can be seen and therefore the #1 factor that is causing your hair problems can be seen in the microscope. Stress shows up as a yellow color in the middle of the hair and lack of nutrition also shows in the medulla of the hair and the most obvious is the build up that is easily seen in the microscope. Each problem must be handled for your h air to become healthy again.

Hair loss is typically caused by stress, dht or lack of nutrition or even build up on the root of the hair. So what do you do if you have one of these problems? The answer is varied for each problems and many women and men will have more than one. For example dht chokes off the hair and causes the nutrition level to fall in the hair. Therefore both of these must be handled for the hair to become healthy again. The analysis can also be used to see why women or men have more breaking hair than they should have. It helps to show if hair has been damaged during perms, coloring or h ighlights. It is a great tool that can be used to define how healthy the hair is general and is used by top hair salons on their clients before they start color work to make sure that the hair is healthy enough to handle it.

As far as products go you should know about the basic hair products that help to make your hair healthy. First is a deep cleansing shampoo along with an oil that will deep cleanse the scalp and the root of the hair. The best is A Follicle Cleanser shampoo along with Jojoba oil to help remove the stubborn and deep sebum plugs and bacteria that prevent the proper amount of nutrition and oxygen that should reach the hair.

The second set of products are designed to stimulate the hair and these products help to produce a better blood flow to the root of the hair. This stimulates healthy hair growth and this in turn makes the hair stronger and ready to hand procedures such as coloring and perming. And the final set of products are nutrition based which feed the root of the hair the nutrition that it needs to be healthy. These products can range from hair vitamins to vitamin shampoos. Understanding Hair Growth Cycles And Hair Loss

Wednesday, 22 July 2009

Hair growth products are used to treat hair loss. Find out more about them here. For nutritional tips, see this article covering vitamins for hair loss. Rebecca Prescott presents this site with vitamins and hair loss information.

We all lose a certain amount of hair each day - anywhere from 50 to 100 to 125 hairs. True hair loss occurs when these hairs we lose don't grow back, or when the amount of hair we lose each day exceeds this normal range.

Hair loss can occur as a result of medications, such as chemotherapy treatments or blood thinners, which can damage the telogen hairs, or stop the natural cell division that then produces weakened hair that is susceptible to breaking. High doses of vitamin A can also lead to hair loss as well. The most common type of hair loss, however, is where more and more hair follicles enter what is called the resting phase (telogen phase) in the hair growth cycle.

Overall, hair grows continuously from the scalp, but it moves away from the scalp in 3 phases. Hair is not all uniformly in one phase. Different parts of the scalp will be in different phases, so at any one time you should have hair follicles in all 3 stages. Generally, most (90%) of the hair will be in the anagen phase, 10 to 14% of the hair will be in the telogen phase, and only 1 to 2% of hair in the catogen phase.

The first phase is the Anagen phase, which is the growth phase. This can last anywhere between 2 and 8 years. A shorter anagen phase will limit how long your hair can grow. Hair cells at the root divide rapidly, which lengthen the hair shaft.

In the next phase, the catagen phase, the outer root of the hair follicle shrinks and attaches to the root of the hair. Hair growth stops here. This phase lasts 1 to 2 weeks.

The telogen phase is the resting phase. This lasts from 5 to 6 weeks in normal hair. Hair doesn't grow in this phase, but it stays firmly rooted in the scalp as long as the follicle stays in a resting phase below it. New growth begins at the end of the resting phase, and this is when natural hair shedding will happen, as the new growth pushes the old hair out.

In male pattern baldness, more hairs enter the telogen phase. This effects of this are an increase in hair shedding. Hair gradually becomes thinner and shorter, and in the end, the hair follicles shut down.

A Golden Future with Hair Restoration

Friday, 17 July 2009

Hair loss affects you in many ways but the main thing that it does is destroy confidence. Without confidence you have problems going about general life. Life is ultimately a competition and without all your natural attributes, such as a full head of hair, it is difficult to see how the game is fair. It can affect relationships or future relationships, job interviews, respect in friendship groups and perhaps more generally how we react to the rest of the world. It is no wonder that people with hair loss are increasingly looking for ways to restore their hair so that they can look forward to a bold future and not a bald one.

Hair restoration is any method used that provides a way for you to replace hairs in an area that is bald or balding. There are 2 main ways that are used. The first involves the stimulation of remaining hair follicles to wake them up and begin producing hair once again. The second relies on transplanting follicles from areas of the scalp where it continues to grow to areas that are thinning or bald. There are a number of techniques used for both strategies. Certainly the stimulation of hair follicles is a good method in the first stages of balding, where as the transplant method is better for older people with more extensive hair loss.

There are a range of techniques that can be employed to promote the hair follicles that you still have. There are drugs such as Minoxidil which despite initially used to aid with the problems of high blood pressure have since been found to stimulate hair production in the scalp as a side effect.

There are still more drugs and herbal cures that work by blocking the effect of androgen male hormones on the working of hair cells. These stop a problematic hormone called DHT being produced in the hair follicles. Persons with genetic type baldness seem to have follicles that are very sensitive to this DHT hormone. They react by making far weaker hair and eventually shrinking away to nothing. These drugs and herbs reawaken the hair follicles causing them to go on to produce good hair once again.

Another method involves the use of low energy laser light. This laser light in the infra red band of the electro magnetic spectrum has been found to stimulate respiration and blood circulation in scalp tissue. This keeps the hair follicles healthy so that they go one to make hair. The usual methodology for these treatments is to first reawaken the scalp follicles, get them to make healthy hair and then keep them in this growth period so that they don't wither away and die off.

The alternative for people with bigger bald areas is to use some type of hair transplant. This always involves a degree of hair transplant surgery. methods in this area have improved greatly over the last few years. They all depend on the fact that follicles from the back of the head always continue to produce healthy hair no matter where located. For some reason the hair cells remain resistant to the DHT chemical even if they are transplanted.

Early methods used to transplant strips of scalp skin complete with follicles. This has the difficulty of causing a lot of pain, scarring at the back of the head and the problem in getting a natural look in the new location. New techniques use microscopes to identify and extract small groups of hair follicles and transplant them to the new area. In this way the level of disruption to the donor site is very small, which reduces scarring in this area. During the transplant of these follicle groups it is possible to make sure that they look natural in their new location by putting them at the correct angle and direction to lie evenly in comparison to the remaining hair.

In terms of hair transplant cost the older methods are the cheapest because they are less labor intensive. However, as can be seen there are larger benefits in the newer follicular unit treatment. It is a problem that some clinics are still using the old methods purely because of the extra profits that can be made.

These hair restoration methods that have been given could be seen as a life long process with people starting with regrowing and maintaining hair follicles and then going on to hair transplants later in life. Costs can be high as visits to clinics have to be maintained over many years. However, the results can be very good and potentially life changing making a bold future a reality.

Women's Hair Loss: Finally The Solution To Thinning Hair!

Thursday, 25 June 2009

An estimated 40% of women experience noticeable hair loss by the age 40. Women rarely lose their hair due to genetic predisposition. However hair loss in women is reaching new high levels. Women's hair loss can start as early as the late teens to early twenties. Most commonly, women experience an overall thinning of hair rather than a receding hair line like men do. It is normal to lose 50 to 150 hairs in a day; however hair loss in women usually occurs when these hairs start to be replaced by shorter, thinner hairs. This can be hard to notice at first, but over time it can become very apparent. Thinning hair loss in women may be caused by many problems:

Hormonal imbalance and other cyclical shifts.

Hair loss related to pregnancy postmenopausal trauma.

Effects of medications including birth control pills.

Nervous conditions including tension and stress.

Medical treatments such as chemo therapy and thyroid conditions.

Harsh chemicals such as commercial shampoos, perms, hair color, and bleach

Iron, vitamin and mineral imbalance.

Severely poor diet including dehydration.

Poor circulation can cut off the nutrients that blood flow delivers to the scalp.

Good News For Hair Loss Suffers:

Women have a higher success rate than men, because they have less testosterone and fewer, more evenly dispersed receptor sites in the follicles. In as little as 3 months you can start to notice fuller, thicker hair and even new hair growth.

* Regenerx penetrates the hair shaft, restoring the follicle, resulting in thicker hair.

* Regenerx improves circulation by increasing blow flow to the scalp.

* Regenerx also acts as a thickening agent that naturally conditions and will not alter or damage color treated hair.

* Regenerx is all natural safe alternative to Rogaine however without the side effects associated with minoxidil which can include scalp irritation, itchiness and dryness. Also, unlike minoxidil, Regenerx does not contain any alcohol or propylene glycol (PPG) which can really irritate the scalp and alter or damage color treated hair.

Regenerx- Finally...the solution for thinning hair.

Regenerx was developed from clinical research work conducted at Department of Dermatology, Aberdeen Royal Infirmary, in Scotland.

Treatment with this formulation in the patients suffering from mild to severe hair loss showed significant improvement compared with the control group. Researchers have concluded that pharmacologically active stimulants for hair growth are present in this formulation of specific essential oils and that these oils can be therapeutic in patients with alopecia and thinning hair. The researchers also point out that the formulation caused no side effects, while steroids and other common agents can cause adverse side effects as described above.

Regenerx contains a unique blend of natural oils like cedarwood, rosemary, and lavender which help stimulate hair growth by increasing blood flow to the scalp. More blood flow allows more of the important nutrients and vitamins to reach the scalp. Increased blood circulation can help awaken previously dormant follicles and promote new hair growth.

Regenerx formulation also includes jojoba, grapeseed, thyme, and rosemary oils to help condition and revitalize the scalp. These ingredients contain antioxidants which neutralize free-radicals that can damage cells of the scalp. Natural oils like these moisturize and soften dry, damaged scalp to help restore hair follicles and promote healthy hair growth. Jojoba and grapeseed oils are also very effective carrier oils. Carrier oils promote the absorption of other oils into the skin to further increase their effectiveness.

Hair follicles can sometimes become clogged with build-ups of sebum that inhibit hair growth. It's important to clean out this build-up to make way for new hair growth. Lavender, thyme, and jojoba are natural oils that can clear out sebum to make way for new hair growth. In some cases bacteria can inhibit hair growth. These oils also have antiseptic properties that can destroy harmful bacteria and soothe the scalp to create a better environment for hair growth.

Women experiencing hormonal changes often find that their hair starts to thin and becomes brittle. Years of harsh treatment combined with blow-drying and exposure to the sun may irreparably damage hair and decrease volume. Regenerx is a natural way to bring back fuller hair by stimulating hair growth as well as volumizing existing hair using natural essential oils. Whether you are experiencing advanced women's hair loss, noticing a slight thinning of your hair, or want to prevent hair loss altogether. Regenerx provides a unique and effective treatment for women's hair loss that can have you seeing noticeable results just in 3 months or less. You don't have to suffer from the effects of hair loss. Finally there is a effective all natural solution for thinning hair.

Natural Hair Loss Treatment - The Lost Art Of Hair Repair

Sunday, 21 June 2009

While there are certainly a number of medical treatments that offer great results, experts say that natural hair loss treatment can yield some of the best benefits for anyone concerned about the health of their hair. Most people choose to treat their hair loss with medications or surgery, such as Minoxidil or hair transplantation. However many people fail to realize that medication and surgery are costly and may carry some harmful side effects and risks. The safest and most cost efficient form of hair loss therapy is natural hair loss treatment, which includes healthy dieting, herbal remedies, exercise and proper hair care techniques. Natural hair loss treatment has become the “Lost Art” of hair repair and is often neglected as a form of treatment among the very pricey alternatives.

A fundamental principal in natural hair loss treatment is that the same foods that are good for your health, are good for your hair. Although hair loss can be caused by many other variables, lack of proper nutrition will cause hair loss in most people. Foods that are high in protein, low in carbohydrates, and have reduced fat content can help in maintaining healthier hair and preventing hair loss. For example, essential fatty acids, found in spinach, walnuts, soy, tuna, sardines, sunflower seeds and canola oil, are important dietary essentials useful in keeping hair healthy. The omega 3 and omega 6 fatty acids contain anti-inflammatory properties that are useful in maintaining healthy hair. Insufficient levels of these essential fatty acids could lead to quicker hair loss.

A deficiency in vitamin B6 and vitamin B12 can also lead to excessive hair loss. Foods containing B vitamins, like liver, chicken, fish and soybean are important to healthy hair growth and natural hair loss treatment. Both vitamin B6 and vitamin B12 are found in protein rich foods, which are needed to maintain natural hair growth. B vitamins are very essential to one’s diet in order to prevent excessive hair loss. Certain vitamins and nutritional supplements are often necessary to restore protein levels which in turn, are useful in preventing hair loss. Increasing vitamin B intake in one’s diet is a successful way to prevent or treat your hair loss naturally.

Alongside the concept of healthy eating of vitamins, minerals and nutrients are also the use of herbal remedies that are effective in preventing hair loss as a natural hair loss treatment. Among the herbs making medical headlines is Saw Palmetto. Although most studies of Saw Palmetto have been for the treatment of prostatic disease, more recent studies have been conducted on its effectiveness in treating hair loss. The herb has been found to work in fighting benign prostatic disease by lowering levels of DHT, which is a known cause of androgenic alopecia, the medical term for male or female pattern hair loss. While there are no clinical trials supporting this herb’s usefulness as a natural hair loss treatment, there is some reliable research proving that it can slow down androgen activity within the hair follicle.

Nettles, usually taken in the form of Nettle Root Extract, has shown itself to be effective in preventing hair loss as well. Nettles are rich in vitamins A and C, that are beneficial in inhibiting DHT production and promoting hair growth as a natural hair loss treatment. Other traditional herbs that are useful as natural hair loss treatments are green tea, licorice extract, horsetail, ginger, psoralea seeds, apple cider vinegar, rosemary and sage tea.

Research is constantly discovering modern forms of natural hair loss treatments. The list of treatments summarized in this article are only a fraction of the available natural therapies for hair loss. Everyone has some hair loss from day to day. In fact, it is normal to lose up to 100 strands of hair a day. However, some people lose a lot more hair than expected, due to genetic reasons, disease, medications, stress, injury, or an unhealthy diet. Regardless of the cause of hair loss, natural hair loss treatment, involving changes in diet and lifestyle, is the safest form of preventive hair treatment around. Catching your hair loss in its early stages and treating it naturally is among the best lines of defense in preventing excessive hair loss and the safest method for treating it.

What’s In Your Shampoo? Hair Health, And Hair Loss Prevention Using Natural Products

Wednesday, 17 June 2009

We do our shopping and purchase our hair care products and assume we are doing the right things for hair health. Through promotion and marketing we are led to believe that some of the products available today are things we just can’t do without. But is that really true?

To find the answer you must first look at the structure of hair. Below the skin is the hair follicle, the sebaceous gland and blood vessels. The hair itself is made up of protein. When you brush your hair it causes the sebaceous gland to produce sebum. This oily substance coats and protects the hair from the elements. It also stimulates the blood vessels to provide the nourishment your hair needs. Brushing your hair and or massaging the scalp are beneficial to hair health.

With commercial products, most shampoos and conditioners contain harsh chemicals and synthetic products. In shampoos, that means it can over clean your hair and strip it of its precious oils. Now you need to condition it to replace the oils. It can harm the scalp and hair follicles. It is the same with laundry detergents. They are loaded with fillers and less actual soap so that they can sell you more detergent. It’s a money making strategy that has worked so they will continue to do so.

Now if you are like most people, you’ve read the labels but don’t have a clue as to what the ingredients really are and what their function is. Here it is in layman’s terms:

1) Distereate and propylene glycol or glycol are petroleum based (crude oil). They are very cheap which is why they are widely used in the cosmetic industry.

2) Isopropyl alcohol is another very cheap solvent.

3) Propylparaben or Methylparen are preservatives that are synthetic. The human body typically does not understand synthetic, it understands organic.

4) Cetearyl alcohol is an emulsifier and it can be natural or synthetic. Synthetic is often used because it’s cheaper and easier to produce.

These petrochemicals are absorbed through the skin, then down through the organs and tissues. Many believe that long term exposure to these toxins can cause permanent damage anywhere in the body, and yet, governments have sided with big industry to not require them to disclose what these products contain or what they really are. Instead we have big fancy names you can hardly pronounce let alone understand.

The solution? It’s not as hard as you think. It’s as close as you health food store or even your own fridge. Here are some tips:

1) Buy a natural liquid soap from the health food store. Also purchase some essential oils such as lavender (for all hair types), rosemary, clary sage, cedar wood, birch and peppermint (for hair loss) bergamot, rosewood, eucalyptus etc. Also purchase natural oils such as olive, jojoba, or avocado. Here’s what to do; in a clean spray bottle, pour in about ½ a cup of distilled or spring water. Add 1 cup of liquid soap. Then take 2 tsp of your vegetable oil and add 10 to 20 drops of your chosen essential oils. It can be just one or several combined oils. Shake gently. There you have it. Simple as that! (Essential oils always need to be in a vegetable oil base because of its concentration). You should not need a cream rinse after that because oils will be replaced.

2) If you need deep conditioning, try saturating your hair in mayonnaise or warmed olive oil. Wrap tightly and cover with a shower cap and let rest on the hair for approximately 20 minutes, then rinse out. You can also take 2 egg yolks and whisk them until frothy, then add some warm water. Pour over hair and leave on for 2 minutes then rinse well.

3) It’s a good idea to do a final rinse on your hair with something acidic such as cider vinegar, lemon juice, beer or even milk. Add any of these ingredients with some water to rinse your hair with to restore the alkaline/acid balance of your hair and scalp, and take off any residue you may have left on your hair.

There are many good natural recipes for healthy hair but these are a few things to get you started in the right direction. Experiment with different essential and vegetable oils to find what you like best. Natural, your body understands, so here’s to a good hair day!

Hair Loss Basics You Need to Know If You Want to Stop Hair Loss.

Monday, 8 June 2009

First let me explain hair growth.

Hair actually is formed at the base of a hair follicle. A follicle is like a pouch that is located below the skin. What we usually call hair is actually the hair shaft, which is hardened tissue that grows from a follicle.

As you know our head contains thousands of hair follicles. Did you know that not all of them are not active at the same time? It's true. Studies proved that not more than 80% of our follicles are producing hair growth at any one time. The remaining 20% of the follicles are asleep or dormant.

When our inactive or dormant hair follicles start working again, they push out the old hair while producing a new one. Our hair grows from the follicle at an average rate of one-half inch every month. The hair growth continues for a period varying between four and seven years, after which the hair begins a 'resting' phase. After this resting phase, it is time for the hair to fall out. As a hair falls out, a new hair grows in its place after a gap of three weeks to three months. There are chances of us losing 50 to 100 hairs in any day. Some of us lose even more than that, not to regrow hair back again. This is why you need to have help starting back up the hair follicle engine.

Depending on age, weight, metabolism, hormones, ethnicity, medications, and Genes hair will grow differently, which is why some hair loss solutions work for some people and not others.

There are 3 distinct phases of hair growth: Anagen, Catagen and Telogen.

1. The anagen phase is also called the active growth phase.

This phase continues for several years. At any given time, the major portion (85%) of our body hair is found to be in this phase.

During this Anagen phase, the hair has an abundance of melanin (Pigment).

2. The Catagen or the regressive phase lasts for a period of nearly two weeks, during which the hair stops growing but has not yet shed. It has been observed that about 3 - 4% of our body hair is in this phase at any given time.

3. The telogen phase or the resting phase continues for 5 - 6 weeks, at the end of which the hair falls out and a new hair begins to take shape. Nearly 10-13% of our body hair is in this phase at any given time. There is an extensive loss of hair when more hair enters and stay in this phase. Research has established that the shock caused to the human system by stress and sickness can result in a larger percentage of hair staying in the resting phase, leading to reduced active hair regrowth along with an accelerated period of loss of hair.

OK, now how do we get our hair to wake up, fall out and grow back stronger?

We already mentioned above the main contributors to hair loss which were, age, weight, metabolism, hormones, ethnicity, medications, and Genes. Other factors that can cause hair loss include, childbirth, birth control pills, disease or illness, hair treatments because chemicals are used, hair styling like braiding, weaving and some doctors will tell you that a poor diet can effect hair loss.

Some of these factors we cannot control but others we can control. All studies indicate that the main contributor that we can control is DHT (DiHydrotestosterone).

DiHydrotestosterone, (DHT) is an active metabolite of the testosterone hormone that is formed in the adrenal gland, hair follicles, prostate glands and testes. DHT belongs to the class of compound known as androgen's, which is commonly known as the testoids or androgenic hormone to doctors but for us its' a type of steroid hormone. Males produce the DHT very early in life. This helps in the formation of the male specific characteristic such as development of the body hair, development of the facial hair, thickness of the voice and etc. DHT Blockers work to prevent the effects of this hormone after the puberty phase is completed, and the abundance of this compound is no longer needed in men.

DHT in the scalp is the main contributor of hair loss. DHT is created by testosterone which is why hair loss mainly affects males. When testosterone is naturally converted to DHT, the result is hair loss. Although everyone has DHT some people lose hair while others don't.

Hormonal changes are the #1 factor in hair loss of both men and women. This is mainly because of the hair follicles having a greater number of Androgen's receptors (regulators of gene expressions) for the DHT to attach to.

In simple terms the hair follicles need to block DHT build up and this will keep the hair on your head where it belongs.

Understanding the role of the DHT both in the male and the female pattern baldness, the researchers have discovered some unique way to prevent this hormone to act on the receptors in the scalp. Products that prevent those hormones are often called DHT Blockers.

Research has established that DHT is 30 times more potent as compared to the testosterone hormone. This is due to the fact that it has an increased affinity for the androgen receptor. However, there are many topical DHT blockers and inhibitors that are easily available in the open market under different brand names - being manufactured and marketed by different companies. Inhairit, Advica, Procerin, ProFillica and Provillus are some of the DHT inhibitors.

Saw Palmetto is one of the most potent and effective herbal or natural DHT blocker, which is far cheaper than most of the other DHT inhibitors in the market, but may not be as effective for some people as the products listed above. Blocking DHT is effective in slowing the effects of the hormone on the follicle, slowing hair loss. Some hair loss shampoo formulas use Saw Palmetto in their ingredients as a topical inhibitor for DHT.

It is believed that DHT also participates in the development of acne. Women with high level of the DHT will develop some male secondary sex properties such as hair growth just above their upper lips, or side burn whiskers, more developed muscles and thick voice. There are specific DHT Blocker available for women. Although the exact reasons have yet to be discovered it has been established by the researchers that the over production of DHT leaves the subjects exposed to the risks of prostate cancer and benign enlargement of the prostate.

Female Pattern Hair Loss: What Causes Hair Loss In Women?

Thursday, 14 May 2009

There exists a widespread connotation that hair loss is greatly prevalent among males. But this connotation could be defied with the fact that even a good number of women suffer from hair loss. Although it's not that easy to ascertain exact causes of hair loss among women there are two or three popular reasons attributed to hair loss among them.

Despite widespread hair loss among women, very rarely they happen to be bald. Even women don't show complete disappearance of hairs from one particular part of scalp that usually happens with males. A woman normally experiences evenly distributed hair loss from scalp that means hairs fall from all parts of scalps, most likely in equal proportion.

Some of the common causes of female hair loss are:

Androgenetic Alopacea

It is a phenomenon inside the female body in which testosterone (male hormone), which is present in women in dormant state, undergoes chemical reactions to form DHT. This DHT affects hair follicles, their normal functioning, hair regeneration and growth, resulting in hair loss and female baldness in the later stages. However female hormones resist its effect to prevent complete baldness.

Alopacea Areata

It is an uneven type of hair loss that may be due to various deficiencies in the body. These deficiencies could be due to lesser intake of required nutrients and vitamins. As less than required intake of essential body minerals and vitamins weakens immune system. With a weakened immune system hair follicles are less likely to fight with disrupting factors giving a way to temporary follicle dysfunction. It in turn results in hair loss.

Telogen Effluvium

This is a condition in which women suffer hair loss due to unexpected shock or stress and extreme emotional imbalances. Usually an unanticipated stress situation gives way to short term depression that adversely affects hair. In that period sharp hair loss is witnessed. Most often women conceiving baby for the first time experiences this type of hair fall. A woman fired from work place or divorce could be other reasons of Telogen Effluvium.

These three are primary reasons of hair loss in women. Apart from that a woman may experience hair loss due to genetic causes as well as some medications may also result in hair loss as a side effect.

Hair And Scalp Diseases - Alopecia Areata

Tuesday, 12 May 2009

If you were to ask, an individual who suffers from Alopecia Areata what it is you may be surprised at their answer. Instead of giving you the medical terminology that goes with this condition, they will simply tell you that it is a discouraging and disheartening condition. It is a form of hair loss that those suffering from it find frustrating.

As far as the cause of it goes, it is believed to be a malfunction in the autoimmune system of the sufferer. It does just restrict itself to male or female as either can be affected with it. It most often comes on quickly and becomes noticeable rapidly. It seems to affect one side more than the other for reasons unknown. Alopecia areata is not to be mistaken as being male pattern baldness, which is hereditary. Something that is seen throughout the generations amongst the men of the family.

When an individual suffers from an autoimmune disorder is almost as if the body turns on itself and will attack various components of the body. This is what happens in the case of Alopecia Areata. The body simply attacks the hair as if it were a foreign entity. It centers its attack on the individual hair follicles.

When biopsies are taken and conducted on skin that is affected with Alopecia Areata it will show the immune cells within the hair follicle that should not be there. There are several autoimmune disorders such as thyroid disease or rheumatoid arthritis that are autoimmune diseases just to name a few. Sometimes the Alopecia Areata will co incide with this. There has been some evidence to indicate that this condition may be heredity.

There is a pattern to this type of hair loss, which shows patches of hair loss. Then there is a pattern that indicates a thinning that appears to be more general it’s called diffuse Alopecia Areata. In severe cases there can be total scalp baldness technically known as alopecia totalis. It doesn’t happen too often but the entire body can become hairless called Alopecia Universalis. With men, it can affect total hair loss of the beard.

It would seem that the condition alopecia areata affects children right up to younger adults. In very rare cases, it will affect toddlers and it could affect children into their mid adulthood.
